Celebrating nearly four decades of excellence: 597th Transportation Brigade bids farewell to Mrs. Carrie Johnson
Traffic management and quality assurance specialist receives Civilian Meritorious Service Medal during final week of service
FORT EUSTIS, Va. — The 597th Transportation Brigade celebrated the retirement of Carrie Johnson this week, honoring her more than 39 years of dedicated service to the nation and capping off a historic final week of awards and recognition. The retirement marks the conclusion of a highly distinguished civil service career within the U.S. Army Transportation Command (ARTRANS).
Department of the Army Civilians like Johnson are the bedrock of our institutional continuity and readiness, providing decades of specialized technical expertise that enables "Rapid Support" to seamlessly project power across the globe.
On September 30, 2026, her final week with the brigade culminated with the presentation of her official Certificate of Retirement alongside the Civilian Meritorious Service Medal.
The medal was awarded for her "beyond" exemplary service as a traffic management specialist, quality assurance specialist and member of the 597th Ocean Cargo Clearance Authority (OCCA) team, recognizing nearly four decades of unwavering technical expertise and commitment to the civilian workforce.
Col. Edward K. Woo, commander of the 597th Transportation Brigade, said Department of the Army Civilians like Johnson are the backbone of the Rapid Support team.
“Carrie Johnson represented the diligence, heart, and soul of our organization for nearly four decades,” said Woo. “Her thirty-nine years of incredible service to the nation and the Army transportation mission represent the highest standards of the joint transportation enterprise.”
“Carrie served as a pillar of reliability and operational excellence for the 597th Transportation Brigade,” Woo added. “We honor her stellar career and thank her for a lifetime of selfless service.”
John Hanson, deputy to the commander, also praised Johnson’s service and recalled that she began her career at Military Traffic Management Command (MTMC) Bayonne at the Port of New York and New Jersey and then moved to Fort Eustis, Virginia, to help establish the MTMC operations center here.
Later, when the MTMC became the Military Surface Deployment and Distribution Command (SDDC), Johnson made the move to SDDC headquarters at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois.
Johnson then returned to Fort Eustis after the relocation of the 597th Transportation Brigade from Sunny Point.
During Johnson’s tenure at Fort Eustis, SDDC formally changed its name to the U.S. Army Transportation Command (ARTRANS).
“Ms. Carrie Johnson has been an outstanding employee and member of the 597th team, who also reflects the history and changes of ARTRANS over the last 39 years,” said Hanson. “From MTMC to SDDC to ARTRANS, Ms. Johnson served the command at four locations– contributing immeasurably to [organizational] success everywhere she worked… we wish her all the best in her retirement.”
Johnson’s retirement accolades follow another major milestone from earlier in the year.
On March 11, 2026, Johnson was inducted into the Honorable Order of St. Christopher during a ceremony held in the Regimental Room at the U.S. Army Transportation Museum.
The prestigious honor, presented by brigade commander Col. Edward K. Woo and Command Sgt. Maj. Nancy Sainz, serves as a testament to her sustained excellence and lasting impact on the U.S. Army Transportation Corps.
During her recognition ceremonies, teammates Gene Sullivan, deputy operations chief, and Faye Banks, Ocean Cargo Clearance Authority team, highlighted Johnson's extensive achievements and decades of devotion to the unit.
Throughout her tenure, Johnson was widely recognized not just as an exceptional professional, but as a trusted friend, co-worker, and beloved family member to the entire brigade whose enduring contributions exemplified the highest traditions and values of the military profession.
Woo and Sainz led the installation in recognizing Johnson’s impactful career, commending her exceptional work ethic and steady leadership.
As she enters retirement, the "Rapid Support" family extends its deepest gratitude to Mrs. Johnson for her decades of selfless service and celebrates this well-deserved milestone.
As Sullivan said, “She may be leaving the office, but she will always be a member of the family here.”
